About Nathan McGowan

As an MBA student at JWMI with an AI leadership focus, I put lessons learned in the classroom one day into practice the next as Associate Manager at Sophia Learning, offering affordable access to higher ed courses. Previously, I designed and taught courses using a mix of pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy as a Graduate Instructor of advanced technical writing, public speaking, and internet research courses at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Working with a group of like-minded technology enthusiasts, I collaborated in radical ways to bring the latest multimodal writing tools into the hands of our students. My pedagogical approaches have varied from gamification to contract grading and my teaching style derives from the pen refill. A seemingly harmless tool for incarcerated students to use to write with, the pen refill embodies the willingness to learn, no matter the obstacles placed before you. I still hold true to my teaching style each day; to offer each learner a chance to recognize how learning to write better can lead to betterment in areas we care about most, whether it be personal, professional, civic, academic, or a combination of life's four cornerstones.
