About Nathan Monell

Nathan Monell is the executive director for the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), America’s oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy association. PTA’s local units and more than 3 million members flourish across all the US with a majority of its units in Title I schools. At PTA, Nathan advances family engagement and public policy addressing the educational success and well-being of our nation’s children. This continues a lifelong commitment to elevate the voice of consumers as partners in the design, delivery, and evaluation of services. He has provided strategic programmatic and advocacy leadership to services supporting youth and families, foster care, mental health, educational/employment and HIV/substance abuse prevention and care. He has led public policy efforts in all these areas at local, state, and federal levels of government and partnered with numerous foundations and corporations in improving outcomes and advancing equity in all communities. Nathan is an ASAE Certified Association Executive. He earned Georgetown University’s Certificate in Nonprofit Management, an MA in Communication Studies (Organizational Communication/Behavior) from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech from Cornerstone University. Nathan has served as keynote speaker, consultant and/or trainer of nonprofits, their members, and their boards in the areas of governance, executive compensation and evaluation, human resources, and strategic planning with national organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers, American School Counselors Association, National School Public Relations Association, Georgetown University’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership Nonprofit Executive Certificate Program, The Society for Public Health Education, the National Art Education Association, GALA Choruses and more. Nathan is a Board Member of The Prometheus Consortium (which promotes effective association management practices and provides opportunities for peer consultation and problem-solving), Member/Previous chair of the Learning First Alliance (a partnership of leading education organizations representing more than 10 million members dedicated to improving student learning in America's public schools), Member of the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board, Member of the Motion Picture Association Movie Ratings Appeal Board, and previously as Member of the advisory committee for the Dream Project of Virginia. Nathan and his husband, Robert Pignato, are proud dads of two adopted children, Kira and Gonzalo.
