About Nathan Murtha

I am currently a Medical Physicist with Alberta Health Services. In this role, I'm a member of the stereotactic ablative radiotherapy group, as well as the craniospinal irradiation group. I also contribute to the quality assurance program for our linear accelerators. I'm excited to be applying my knowledge in a clinical setting, and to constantly be learning on the job! Prior to starting as a clinical physicist, I completed a CAMPEP-accredited residency in radiation oncology physics at the Tom Baker Cancer in Calgary. I have a CAMPEP-accredited PhD in physics with a specialization in medical physics. The focus of my PhD research was in applications of Compton gamma imaging to radiological security. Specifically, I developed advanced tomographic reconstruction methods to estimate the distribution and activity of radioactive materials over a large area using a small number of viewpoints. I employed Monte Carlo simulations in EGSnrc as part of this work. I also have a CAMPEP-accredited MSc in medical physics. My research was focused on determining if quantitative measures of image quality could be used as a predictor of the accuracy of recovery of model parameters in quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging using compressed sensing.
