Background
About Nathan Swinger
Resourceful, reflective, respectful. I committed my life’s work to making a difference in the lives of my pediatric patients and their families. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CLINICAL PEDIATRICS I am passionate about the art of medicine. My primary mission is to deliver high value quality medical care to critically ill children in Indiana and throughout the Mid-West. A firm believer in the concept of family-centered patient care, I take every opportunity to educate parents and guardians as well as students and medical professionals in my charge. True to the academic mission of life-long learning, I am currently pursuing a Master’s of Education degree. I take my commitment very seriously, seeking out every opportunity to elevate my teaching to the next level. I mentor a complement of six fellows, nine nurse practitioners as well as other medical professionals. I set high expectations for my students, offering continual feedback to help them grow. Additionally, I am a certified PALS (pediatric advanced life support) instructor. I teach PALS to ensure all students and medical professionals at my institution are well prepared to intervene for acutely critically ill children. I bring my education to bear on the material presented in PALS, emphasizing adult learning principles in all coursework. MEDICAL DIRECTOR NURSE PRACTITIONERS I direct a team of nine NPs (nurse practitioners), developing a vision for their role in the pediatric intensive care units and helping them work to the top of their license. I present educational lectures to the team, keeping their skills current. I assess their performance in an effort to improve their skills. I strive to position the NPs to work independently. They are assigned their own ventilated patients, they respond to codes and they are the primary providers on the hospital-wide rapid response team. They truly work as an extension of our physicians, a model which increases job satisfaction.
