Surfaces, at the molecular level, experience a different chemical environment than the bulk and enjoy a higher chemical reactivity. Accordingly, surfaces (and interfaces) are featured in nature's most important chemical and biological processes. Industry is walking a similar path, and heterogeneous systems (and their surfaces) are paramount to humanity's future successes. My (current) research interests lie in tailoring materials, with a focus on functionalizing "green" biopolymers to give them an edge over plastics, manufacturing novel inorganic 2D platforms with customizable surfaces, and coupling both with metal nanoparticles to produce record-breaking heterogeneous nanocatalysts. & hl=en
