About Nathaniel Smith

My passions include AI, software engineering, and all things tech. My goal is to leverage my skills and passion to transform the software industry and redefine how professionals in every industry use tech. As a high school freshman, I was introduced to computer programming through AP Computer Science. That year, a hobby was formed - one which has since blossomed into a full time passion. Now, as a computer science student, I am constantly seeking ways to combine my studies with my passions outside of school. Over the last few years, this has led to a newfound passion for artificial intelligence. Inspired by the potential of AI to transform countless industries - from manufacturing to education to music production - I taught myself machine learning concepts and disciplines in 2022, and I stay current on new developments and current practices in AI. Currently, I work as an AI researcher at UVM, investigating novel approaches for preserving the privacy of AI models. Between school and research, I also work as a software engineering intern at the Forest Ecosystem Monitoring Cooperative (FEMC)- a partnership between top New England universities, state parks, government agencies, and many others aimed at conducting environmental research, maintaining data from new and existing research, and providing tools for access and interpretation of research data. Some of my interests in AI at the moment include diffusion models for music generation, multimodal AI, and AI ethics/privacy.
