About Nea Ehrlich

I am a senior lecturer in the Department of the Arts at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel and a visiting scholar at the Universitat Politècnica De Catalunya (UPC). I am an Art Historian by training, although my research reflects a merging of visual disciplines and ranges across contemporary art, digital media, video games and animation (both in the sense of animated imagery but also artificial life, as in robotics and AI). I am most interested in the ethics and epistemology of artificial images and evolving technologies, how these images influence viewers who no longer have any criteria to decipher the origins and evidentiary status of images yet live in an omnipresent screen culture where information is increasingly presented visually. I completed my post-doctoral fellowship at the Polonsky Academy at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, after having received my PhD from the Department of Art History at the University of Edinburgh in 2014. I have published in Studies in Documentary Film, animation: an interdisciplinary journal, Visual Resources. My monograph, Animating Truth: Documentary and Visual Culture in the 21st Century (Edinburgh University Press), won the Society for Animation Studies Norman McLaren/Evelyn Lambart award for Best Scholarly Monograph and the anthology I co-edited, Drawn from Life: Issues and Themes in Animated Documentary Cinema (Edinburgh University Press), was the Runner-Up for the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies 2020 Best Edited Collection Award.
