About Neelima Sharma

After enjoying a 30 years of teaching career in State govt and central govt schools, I went into administration of schools, had the privilege of setting up one of Delhi govt's smart schools,continued in the school for five years. It saw the maximum number of students going into various fields becoming successful. Then I moved from the school administration to Education officer ship where I had the privilege of guiding and motivating school principals and teachers. I was able to sort out the most difficult issues with ease and much aplomb and helped raise the self esteem of all the stakeholders like teachers,students, principals parents and other members of the community. This really helped in improving the academic result of the Directorate. I joined CBSE in 2011 and continued for next few years only to fulfil my dream of initiating a flagship project of CBSE for assessing the communication skills. Curriculum development,examination and training were some of the fields I worked for. I have been really passionate about my CBSE work. I have been able to realise a cherished dream of mine and that is introduction of the assessment of speaking and listening skills along with the reading and writing skills which was already there. The greatest advantage I foresee is that coming generation of students are not going to be inhibited by lack of effective communication skills. And once the students have effective communication skill they become really confident.Trinity College London further helped me in fulfilling my dream of initiating a project on teacher training. I still continue to work with great enthusiasm. The two mega projects of Trinity College London with the Delhi government on Assessment of Spoken English in the years 2017-2019 indeed brought a difference in the life of students in raising their self confidence and self esteem. The subsequent project with the Punjab government teachers during the covid times when we were confined in the four walls of of our homes made teachers have a new perspective in teaching communicative English language in classroom. I feel that has been the greatest reward for me. With varied and vast experience in assessing communication skills in English, my effort is now to develop a standardised frame work of reference for assessment something like CEFR for languages.I would seek suggestions from academics and anyone who would like to contribute to this project-any individual or any organization.
