Background

About Neil Cook

I am an astrophysics postdoctoral researcher scientist at the Universite de Montreal. My current research involves writing pipelines for telescope instruments specifically for SPIRou on the CFHT, NIRPS on the 3.6m in La Silla (specifically for detecting exoplanets via radial velocity and high-resolution spectroscopic analysis of exoplanets atmospheres) and working on the NIRISS AMI/SOSS pipelines for the James Webb Space Telescope. Other research I have been involved with includes- finding ultra-cool members to the Upper Scorpius star-forming region (specifically brown dwarfs and free-floating exoplanets) and looking at light curves for low-mass stars in moving groups - finding unresolved ultra-cool companions (Brown Dwarfs and Exoplanets) to low mass stars (specifically M dwarfs)- studying the Metallicity of Low Mass Stars - finding Wide Companions to Low Mass Stars - searching for exoplanet companions to late M dwarfs using telescopes such as Kepler - studying ultra-cool (late T and Y dwarfs) using instruments such as Spitzer and Flamingos2 I completed my Ph.D. in Astrophysics at the University of Hertfordshire and my Undergraduate and Master's Degree in physics at the University of Manchester. I am a proficient user of the python programming language and have some experience in Java, Javascript, C++, C, SQL, PHP/HTML, Matlab, IDL, and Fortran. As well as this I have a passion for creating space art and playing the piano. Recent first author publications are as follows: Cook, N. J. et al.(2017); Low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopic signatures of unresolved ultracool companions to M dwarfs.(reSubmitted to MNRAS Jan 2017) Cook, Neil James et al.(2016); M Dwarfs from the SDSS, 2MASS and WISE Surveys: Identification, Characterisation and Unresolved Ultracool Companionship. Zenodo. 10.5281/zenodo.61337 Cook, N. J. et al (2016); MNRAS, 457, 2192, A method for selecting M dwarfs with an increased likelihood of unresolved ultracool companionship
