I work with the public every day, and I've learned that every word counts. By simply asking "How can I help?" and listening to the response, I've not only been able to restore tense relationships, I've been able to build up ones that are already great. No one likes to feel marginalized in a business relationship, that's a fact. My experiences over the past several years have proven that the vendor-customer relationship is the most important and often the most tenuous thing that exists in the business world. It requires nurturing, learning, teaching, understanding, adaptability, and room for growth."What's she getting at?" you may be wondering."Well, I'll tell ya," she whispered conspiratorially."Customer Service." Customer Service lives at all levels of a good business relationship, and it is my job to make sure that I can reinforce that relationship through positive interactions with my internal and external customers. I may be increasing a credit limit because a research lab needs to install thirty five freezers, or I may be approving a small body shop for enough gas to run a blow torch once a month. In either transaction, it is my job to be engaging, polite, courteous, and capable. Neither customer is ever going to want to deal with my organization again if I'm not. If they don't want to deal with my organization, my organization makes less money. If my organization makes less money, I won't get that raise. If I don't get that raise, goodbye European summer vacation plans. I don't want to say goodbye to my European summer vacation plans. And neither should you. So be good to your customers and be good to yourself.
