About Ngawai Hooker

Innovative educator with a love of learning, travelling and exploring cultures and languages. A wahine Māori with an international perspective, strong Ngāruahine identity and long term aspirations for rangatahi in Aotearoa using education as a springboard to pave their journey to success. Senior leadership experience as Deputy Principal leading Te Ao Māori, Wellbeing (staff and students), Māori Achievement, Kāhui Ako, Year 11 and an innovative Y9 Core programme Ko Wai Au? which integrates identity, te ao Māori, biculturalism as well as wellbeing/hauora. Middle management experience in pastoral care as a Dean, and curriculum and team development as a Head of Department of English Language. A demonstrated history of working in secondary education in both New Zealand and abroad in Hong Kong across boys’, girls’ and co-educational contexts. Recently completed a Master of Educational Leadership degree researching youth mental wellbeing education in secondary schools which is accessible publically on Research Space and will be published in article form 2021. Awarded the Kui Gloria Kerehoma Memorial (PKW Inc Trust), Ministry of Health and Te Ātihaunui-ā-Paparangi scholarships for post-graduate study and a Teach NZ Study Award for 2019.
