Background

About Nicholas Davis

Approaching my final weeks of a jam packed college experience, I have taken a lot of time to truly reflect on how far I've come, and the endless possibilities in the near future. Entering the University of Delaware, I started out as a Civil Engineer. Coming from a family with a keen eye for science, my path felt laid out for me. This "dream" of mine carried into my Spring semester of Sophomore year, then died shortly after. Switching to Finance might have seemed like a spur-of-the-moment decision to my friends and family, but everyone quickly realized it was the right fit for me. In order to paint a picture of this "greater fit", I'd like to revisit my early youth. At 12 years old, I like to joke and say that it was the age I became a man. Society has many different versions of being a man, but mine was the day my dad transferred the duty of cutting the lawn into the hands of a 90 pound kid. This "chore" turned into an addiction the second my next door neighbor offered $35 for a weekly cut. I started to look forward to early morning Saturdays. That currency on every Saturday would be transported into a Nike shoe box, where I wouldn't allow myself to touch it. Acquiring more lawns from word of mouth and my stellar communication skills, that shoe box slowly filled itself. This carried over into my first job as a busser for a local restaurant. Once my shift was over, I'd receive a manila envelope with the tips I'd made for the night. Just like that 12 year old boy, my 16 year old self would sprint home and store that cash. Even to this day, I still find some of those envelopes lying around. The patience and sheer excitement of watching a Nike shoe box fill to the brim gave me the ability to pay for my first two years of housing at the University of Delaware. The leap from engineering to finance wasn't just about following the money—it was about tapping into what I'm genuinely good at and what I enjoy. I love working with people and making connections, something I’ve been doing since I was leading historic tours at eight years old. My parents used to say I’d be the mayor one day because I could chat with just about anyone and make them feel part of something bigger. Even though switching majors meant losing some credits, it was totally worth it. Keeping up with 18 credits each semester and extra in the winter, I'm on track to graduate on time. This big switch turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life, and I can't wait to dive into the working world and put all I've learned into action.
