About Nicholas Joo

My name is Nick and I am a safety engineer working with level 2 and 3 advance driver assistance systems (ADASs). My current position is focused on evaluating the safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) for the hands-free automated driving systems at Qualcomm. I am developing expertise on compliance with the ISO-21448 standard (Road Vehicles - Safety of the Intended Functionality). My career highlights include- Serving as the lead developer for a patent-pending custom driver alert system for safety critical scenarios in automated driving- Assisting with the development for a patent-pending route planning feature for ADASs- Completing numerous safety analysis projects on various automated driving functions- Developing a suite of audio alerts for a level 2 traffic jam feature. I graduated from the University of Michigan in December 2021 with a degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering; I also completed a minor in German. My personal interests for my career are in operations optimization and consulting. I have strong analytical skills with tools such as Excel (with macro functions), Python, SQL, C++, and Matlab. I have great project management and planning skills, which I have developed by serving as the assistant team leader (scrum master) for the hands-free driving team at Qualcomm. Our company uses Agile to organize our work plans. As scrum master, my responsibilities are to create team assignments for two-week project increments to fulfill the goals from upper management, lead multiple team meetings to clarify expectations and handle risks/impediments for my team members, and create and maintain supplemental information for my team (examples: guidelines for our team, meeting minutes, instructions for various tools, and project increment retrospectives). I obtained certification as a scrum master by Scaled Agile, Inc. in December 2022. Aside from my engineering skills, I hold a lot of great interpersonal skills. I am a hard-working, reliable, dependable, and punctual person. I am an effective multi-tasker and an expert in time management. Thanks for taking the time to read about me!
