Background
About Nicholas Monck
Nicholas Monck is a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Military Law at the United States Naval Academy where he teaches constitutional law, military justice, and operational law. In addition, he chairs the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division's Government, Military, and Public Sector Lawyers committee and serves on the YLD Disaster Legal Services team and the ABA’s Standing Committee on Armed Forces Law. He also sits on the Colorado Bar Association's Military & Veterans Affairs Executive Council. LT Monck commissioned in the United States Navy in August 2019. He initially served as a Legal Assistance attorney and advised servicemembers on family law and probate matters, small claims, and landlord-tenant disputes. He then served as a Defense Counsel where he represented sailors and marines throughout the Indo-Pacific in a wide range of administrative and criminal proceedings. During the Red Hills Water Contamination event, LT Monck stood over 100 hours of watch in the Pearl Harbor Emergency Operations Center. In the fall of 2021, he was selected as the Naval Legal Service Command Junior Officer of the Quarter for his willingness to assist the military families impacted by the crisis. From 2022-2024, LT Monck served as the Staff Judge Advocate for Submarine Squadron 15 in Guam. Submarine Squadron 15 is the American Navy's only forward-deployed submarine squadron. He advised the Squadron's headquarters staff, five fast attack nuclear submarines, and multiple shore commands on a diverse range of legal issues. LT Monck also served as a Squadron Duty Officer where he oversaw operations such as in port movements, diving operations, and medical evacuations of sailors aboard submarines at sea. LT Monck is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and the University of Colorado Law School. As a member of the YLD Disaster Legal Services team, LT Monck has coordinated legal services to survivors of numerous major disasters, including Hurricane Helene, Super Typhoon Mawar, the 2022 and 2024 New Mexico wildfires, and 2023 Indiana severe storms. He was previously a member of the Oahu Search and Rescue Team and has participated in wilderness rescues and recovery missions in Alaska, Arizona, and Hawaii. In his free time, LT Monck enjoys skiing, climbing, and whitewater rafting (he was briefly a raft guide in training while he was waiting for his first set of Navy orders). He has completed the Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit, and Denver marathons and multiple triathlons.
