Background
About Nick Bleil
I approach every project with the same passion and drive as I did on my very first day in advertising, constantly striving to prove myself—because, as retouchers, we always have something to prove. There’s this unspoken expectation to elevate visuals beyond their initial state, to push them to a place where they exceed what’s anticipated. Yes, I’ve done my share of standard retouching and cleanup tasks—it comes with the territory—but what I really love is when there’s room to push the visuals further, to create that “wow” moment. With over 12 years of agency experience, I’ve had the opportunity to work across a wide variety of clients and industries. This diversity keeps me adaptable and well-rounded. I don’t limit myself to any single niche—whether it’s skin, fashion, 3D, or product retouching, I’ve tackled it all. At the end of the day, a pixel is a pixel, but how we push them is what matters. How did I get here? From the moment I stepped onto the creative floor at my first agency, I knew I wanted to create key art. I looked at new business pitch walls like they were masterpieces in a gallery. I sought out the best Photoshop artist in the agency and shadowed him closely, refining my skills. Within 3.5 years, I went from an entry-level studio artist to leading the agency’s first dedicated retouching team. While my work ethic propelled me forward, my experience was often underestimated. I wasn’t always the fastest, and I was overlooked by producers and seasoned veterans (thanks for the rocket fuel). Speed and efficiency came with time, but what truly set me apart were the hours I put in outside of the office. As Malcolm Gladwell said, “Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.” Outside of client projects and deadlines, I stay immersed in personal exploration. That’s why nearly 50% of my current portfolio is unpaid, just-for-fun, work. Despite the demands of a full-time job, being a husband, and a father to two amazing girls, I make time to experiment and push my creative boundaries. I love creating movie posters and product scenes that allow me to push beyond the typical constraints of retouching. Without these personal projects, I wouldn’t have been able to meet the challenges of some of my biggest client jobs, nor would I be trusted with the type of high-level work I’m doing today.
