Background
About Nick Chrisman
I have working in the domain of geographic information for 48 years, developing innovative techniques to analyze and display information about the earth and the people who inhabit it. I have some long term themes in my personal work: addressing data quality, dealing with time and change, and examining institutional and social settings of technology. At various points, I have had the good fortune to join with a talented team. From 1972-82 I learned so much working with an awesomely innovative team at Harvard Lab for Computer Graphcs and Spatial Analysis. That was followed by an equally instructive period with the Dane County Land Records Project in Wisconsin. From 2005-2012, I managed the GEOIDE Network, a network of researchers and user communities across Canada. It was a great opportunity to spark a spirit of cooperation and attention to community needs across Canada. It was my privilege to lead this Network. In 2013, I took on a new challenge as Discipline Head, Geospatial Sciences at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia. Again, it was a privilege to work with a creative team of educators. I completed this period by the end of 2014, retaining the title of Honorary Professor at RMIT. I have returned to the Northern Hemisphere, established in Bellingham, Washington (without a university job for the first time in 43 years). I served as Editor for the journal Cartography and Geographic Information Science for 6 years, and have now handed this over to the next team. Recently I have also returned to teaching (online of course). I hope to continue to contribute to the discipline worldwide through this service, and other writing. Specialties: Geographic information analysis, geospatial sciences, geomatics, data quality investigations, analytical cartography, network of scientists, collaboration, research and innovation networks
