About Nicky MacIas
Hi, I’m Nicky, a Latina linguist, interpreter, and educator passionate about making language and communication more inclusive and liberatory. I’m a third-year PhD student in (sociocultural) linguistics, where I research how signed languages and interpreting reflect and shape our experiences of gender and sexuality, especially in Deaf and queer communities. My work weaves together translanguaging, trans and queer studies, linguistic anthropology and critical sociocultural theories to uncover the rich, complex ways people express who they are. Alongside my research, I teach interpreting, linguistics, and queer studies.
