About Nicola Protetch

My interests as a law student focus on the intersections of climate change, Indigenous and human rights, environmental protection, conflict resolution, and alternative dispute resolution. I hope to work in the expanding field of ADR and negotiation to help create solutions to the climate crisis rooted in social justice and Indigenous self-determination. Recent research has included closing jurisdictional gaps for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, comparative research in UNDRIP implementation at the federal, provincial and territorial levels, and investigating access to legal remedies for human rights violations caused by overseas Canadian mining subsidiaries. My professional experience includes leading national consultations with students to inform Canada's National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence and synthesizing qualitative data into ten tangible action plans to support post-secondary students. I've gotten my hands dirty working in organic agriculture, teaching hands-on skills to elementary students, and grassroots fundraising and organizing for climate justice and Indigenous rights. I also love to cook, read, play folk music, ride my bike, pat dogs, hike, cross-country ski, preserve and ferment local foods, and spend time with my friends and family.
