Authentic leaders in nursing demonstrate presence, mindfulness, social and emotional intelligence, and a commitment to leading by caring. Presence means showing up fully for patients and colleagues, maintaining professionalism, and modeling calmness even in stressful situations. Mindfulness emphasizes self-awareness and intentional action, helping leaders remain grounded and avoid reactive decision-making. Social and emotional intelligence builds trust and strong relationships by promoting empathy, clear communication, and respect for diverse perspectives. Leading by caring ties these elements together, as authentic nurse leaders prioritize compassion, integrity, and ethical decision-making to create healthier work environments and better patient outcomes.To strengthen these characteristics in my own practice, I have identified three life management strategies that reflect authentic leadership:I will set aside intentional time to reflect on my daily experiences, evaluate my responses to stress, and consider how I can align my actions with my values. This practice will help me enhance self-awareness, improve decision-making, and remain grounded in the moment.I will use techniques such as time management, setting realistic goals, and incorporating mindfulness activities (like breathing exercises or meditation) into my daily routine. By managing my stress and maintaining resilience, I can model a healthy balance for others and remain present for my patients and colleagues.I will intentionally practice active listening, seek feedback from peers, and foster supportive relationships. This strategy will allow me to demonstrate social awareness, encourage teamwork, and strengthen a culture of respect and caring within the workplace.Together, these strategies support my development as an authentic leader who can remain present, mindful, empathetic, and caring in both professional and academic settings. They will guide how I present myself in my professional profile, how I reflect in GoReact videos, and how I continue to grow as an advanced practice nurse.
