Background
About Nicolas Vignier
After a career combining clinical practice in infectious and tropical diseases and public health research and intervention, I defended my doctoral thesis (PhD) in 2018 as part of the Social Epidemiology Research Team (Eres) at the Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique (IPLESP) on access to healthcare for people from sub-Saharan Africa, living or not with HIV or HBV, based on data from the ANRS Parcours survey. I worked for 6 years as a hospital practitioner in infectious diseases and head of the Public Health Unit at the Groupe Hospitalier Sud Ile-de-France, where I developed a healthcare and prevention service for vulnerable populations, based on a mobile precarious health team and a healthcare network. After a period of research mobility with the Public Health Research and Innovation Department / CIC Inserm 1424 at the Cayenne Hospital Centre in French Guiana in 2020-2022, where I carried out research projects on the health of migrant populations in French Guiana, particularly people from Haiti, and during which I co-coordinated a mobile team to combat COVID in isolated areas. I was appointed full Professor of medicine - Hospital Practitioner (PU-PH) at Paris Seine-Saint-Denis University Hospitals and Sorbonne Paris Nord University in 2023. I work in the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SMIT) at Avicenne Hospital and in the Parcours Unit (a unit dedicated to supporting migrant women who have experienced sexual violence during their migration). I have been head of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Avicenne Hospital since June 2025. I am a fellow of the Institut Convergences et Migration since its inception, and joined the IAME Inserm UMR 1137 laboratory, where I coordinate the health and precariousness section. I coordinate the national "Migrants and Vulnerable Populations (MiPop)" group under the aegis of the Société de pathologie infectieuse de langue française (SPILF) and the Société française de lutte contre le VIH/Sida (SFLS). I am also an expert on the French High Council for Public Health (HCSP), where I coordinate health recommendations for travellers and a recommendation on access to healthcare for vulnerable migrants. My department is also involved in a number of international cooperation and teaching projects in Burundi, South Kivu in the DRC, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Senegal and French Guiana.
