Background
About Nicole Cusick
I am a Registered Nurse currently practicing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Royal Columbian Hospital, where I provide specialized, tertiary-level care to neonates and their families across British Columbia. My passion for neonatal care began as an Employed Student Nurse and culminated in completing my final nursing school preceptorship in the NICU. I hold an Advanced Certificate in Neonatal Nursing, earned with distinction, from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. In addition to my clinical role, I serve as a preceptor to undergraduate and specialty nursing students, helping them develop the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to neonates and their families. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of the Fraser Valley in 2022, graduating with distinction. During my studies, I conducted a research study on the experiences of D/deaf and Hard of Hearing people in the Canadian health care system. This research earned recognition and awards from the university, the Canadian Association of the Deaf, and the Canadian Nursing Students' Association. I was also honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award at graduation for demonstrating academic excellence, leadership, and consistent clinical performance. During my undergraduate studies, I gained valuable experience as a research assistant for the university’s Centre for Education and Research on Aging, where I contributed to multiple studies on gerontology topics, including personhood and dementia, as well as intergenerational relationships. In September 2025, I began the Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of British Columbia. My goal is to bridge equity-focused research with advanced clinical practice to reduce health care disparities for vulnerable populations.
