Background
About Nicole Vickerman
Nicole Vickerman is the Department Chair and World Geography Team Leader at Clark High School in Plano ISD, the same school she attended. In 2022, she was awarded the inaugural Val Wilkie Jr. Award for Excellence in Teaching Geography by the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education. She is an NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellow. She was the first in her district to earn National Geographic Educator Certification and has been a Certification Mentor, member of the 2018-19 Educator Community Launch Steering Committee, and was a 2019 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow who participated in a Lindblad Expedition to the Arctic. She is also the co-writer and a teacher of the World Geography course for Plano’s online eSchool. Several of her articles and lesson plans have been published in the Texas Council for the Social Studies journal, The Texan, and she edited the new World Geography book for Texas by McGraw-Hill. She has traveled to the Galapagos, Germany, Japan, China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali, and the United Arab Emirates on competitive teacher fellowships, including a Fund For Teachers grant in 2017. Her awards include the National Council for Geographic Education Distinguished Teacher Award in 2009, the World Affairs Council International Educator of the Year in 2010, and the Texas Council for the Social Studies High School Teacher of the Year in 2013, and the HEB 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award. She enjoys promoting geographic education as a member of the DFW World Affairs Council Education Advisory Board, and her classes were filmed for the Grosvenor Department at Texas State’s Teaching with the Stars project. Working with students to further their international awareness motivates her as founding sponsor of the Junior World Affairs Council at Clark. She has been Clark’s Teacher of the Year three times.
