About Nigel Powell

Nigel Powell is a seasoned social work professional with over 25 years of experience across various sectors of social welfare. She currently serves as a Supervisor of School Social Workers with the New York City Public Schools, where she is dedicated to building the capacity of social workers to ensure students are equipped with the mental health support, knowledge, and skills necessary for academic success and overall well-being. In addition to her leadership role in public education, Nigel operates a private practice, providing mental health services rooted in empowerment and culturally responsive care. She is also pursuing her Doctorate in Social Work at New York University. Her capstone project centers on the empowerment, identity formation, and leadership of Caribbean/West Indian (CWI) women—a focus deeply connected to her identity as a second-generation CWI immigrant and her commitment to advancing scholarship in this area. Nigel is driven by a passion for empowering women to realize their fullest potential. Guided by her motto, “When each one teaches one, we all win,” she believes that knowledge is a catalyst for transformation—and that with awareness comes the responsibility to act for the betterment of all.
