About Nigel Somers

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and have wide ranging experience from feasibility studies to the design and construction of large and small civil engineering projects in the power and water resources fields. I am familiar with contract administration and procurement procedures, currently for the Malagarasi hydro scheme in Tanzania and the Chishimba Falls hydro scheme in Zambia, and I also have experience of due diligence and expert witness advisory and reporting roles under UK’s civil procedure rules. I have wide geographic experience including in East and South East Asia, Africa, Europe and South America. Over the past several years I have been involved at various management and technical levels for a variety of prestigious projects and am currently project manager for the refurbishment of four hydropower stations in Zambia which are all commissioned. Also, currently, I am advising on procurement, contracts administration for a large hydro scheme in Georgia. Recently I completed tender documents for the procurement of advance works for the scheme in Georgia. I have also undertaken independent technical review of many small hydro projects and prepared procurement documents for several other hydro schemes. My earlier projects, responsible as design team leader and project manager, include the design of the River Sarawak Regulation Scheme (Malaysia). Other major projects included the design of foundations and pressure pipeline for the Carhuaquero hydroelectric scheme (Peru), the site supervision of construction of Shendam embankment and water supply (Nigeria), the design of several small hydroelectric schemes in Peru (as team leader), Kilombero river ferry crossing (Tanzania), and Mersey tidal power barrage feasibility studies (UK). My responsibilities have also covered many other small projects in all their aspects. I am registered under the UK Construction Skills Certification Scheme for Civil and Structural Engineering Design. After more than 45 years in the industry, I am semi-retired, working 3 days per week.
