I was made redundant for a second time in 1983. That's when I turned to my wife Jo and said:"I can't work for anyone else again." With from redundancy, I went to the bank with a business plan to ask for some funding. The bank manager doubled the to give Jo and I a total of to get set up. It was during a recession. Interest rates were at 14%. It was probably the worst time to start a business. But that didn't hold us back."When are you going to pay me back, Nigel?", the bank manager asked me."Next year", I replied. It was in that moment that Houghton Hams was born. And I kept my promise: The bank manager was repaid a year later. Today, over 40 years later, our business still operates from Moulton in Northampton, where we were founded. With the same secret recipe - the Wagstaff Complete Cure - Houghton Hams remains under the careful management of our family. Led by myself and wife Jo, and our four children, we have 60+ members of staff who make up the extended Houghton Hams family. We're as passionate about our product as we are our family. We select the best regional UK and European-based farms, to produce excellent quality meat products, meeting the strictest welfare and industry standards.
