About Nils Johanson

With over 10 years of work experience in cybersecurity, governance, risk, and reporting, I am a senior director of cybersecurity strategy at Capital One, one of the largest and most innovative banks in the US. I lead the development and execution of enterprise-wide cybersecurity strategies, drive complex cyber technology initiatives, and produce high-level risk reports for the executive committee and board of directors. I am passionate about protecting Capital One and its customers from cyber threats, and advancing the bank's digital transformation and innovation agenda. I bring a diverse and valuable perspective to my role, having worked in both the public and private sectors, and holding a JD degree from the University of Michigan Law School. In my current role, I also serve as the chief regulatory affairs liaison for cybersecurity, supporting extensive interactions with governmental agencies, such as the OCC and the FRB. I leverage my previous experience as a director of enterprise governance at the US Department of Energy, where I oversaw the governance of a $2 billion annual IT and cybersecurity budget, and served as the chief of staff to the CIO. Prior to that, I was a senior foreign affairs officer at the US Department of State, where I advised the assistant secretary for South and Central Asian affairs on cybersecurity, sanctions, defense trade, and technology transfers. I have successfully negotiated and coordinated policies and agreements with various stakeholders, both domestically and internationally, and have a deep understanding of the regulatory and geopolitical landscape of cybersecurity.
