I am a patent and contracts attorney focusing on patent portfolio development and commercialization. This can involve identifying your IP, patent searches and patent filings. Patent searches can help assess the competitive landscape, patentability of your inventions or freedom-to-operate. I also do IP agreement work, such as collaborative research and development agreements, licensing contracts and other technology transfer agreements. My office is working with a number of start-ups that have funding through NRC / IRAP IP Assist and Elevate IP. Our IP Assist work includes programs run though NRC directly, OwnershIP (Innovation Factory), Spark Centre and Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. All IP starts out as an idea. We can help companies determine the right time to protect their IP. We tailor a cost-effective strategy to work within the company budget. We help with collaboration agreements, to work with other companies to build on the innovation while ensuring that the IP is protected and allocated fairly. We can also help with agreements to commercialize the IP, through supply or licensing agreements. We work with companies that are pre-seed (founders with an idea), Seed (founders with a product and maybe some employees), Series A, Series B and beyond. Many of our clients are established private and public companies, universities, colleges, research institutes and teaching hospitals. We also work with international companies looking to protect their IP in Canada.
