About Nolan Lem

I am passionate about the research and development of new audio-visual experiences. My work and research has developed and extended a wide range of new technologies using various forms of AI, signal processing, and algorithm development. My research focuses on a number of interdisciplinary topics related to perception of sound, synthesis, and generative approaches for sound and music computing. My experimental research in auditory perception leverages dynamical systems modeling to examine how we entrain and synchronize to the rhythms in music and nature more broadly. As a designer, I have worked extensively in physical computing, human-computer interfaces, interaction design and the development of novel fabrication techniques. I have worked at a number of leading international institutions for sound research including IRCAM (Paris), GRAME (Lyon), the Computer Music Center (CMC) at Columbia University, and the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University where I finished my PhD in 2022. As an artist working with technology, I've premiered work at Museum of Modern Art Buenos Aires (MAMBA), Pioneer Works (Brooklyn), L'HOSTE Art Contemporain (Arles, FR), and the Danish National Museum of Music (Copenhagen). In 2021, I was a Danish Fulbright Scholar working at the 'Sound and Music Computing' Group at Aalborg University Copenhagen. From 2023-2025, I was a post-doctoral fellow in the division of applied acoustics at Chalmers Institute of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
