About Nuno Lopes

Nuno Lopes is Associate Professor with Habilitation in the Civil Engineering Department of University of Aveiro, lecturing courses in Structures, where he obtained his undergraduate degree, European PhD and Habilitation. He also holds a Master's degree from University of Coimbra. His research focuses on the behaviour of steel structures under fire, contributing to the development of fire design proposals for steel and stainless steel members for incorporation into European Standards (Eurocodes). He has been involved in different research projects, such as participating on the RFCS (European Commission Research Fund for Coal and Steel) funded FIDESC4 "Fire Design of Steel Members with Welded or Hot-Rolled Class 4 Cross-Sections" and coordinating the FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) funded StaSteFi "Fire Design of Stainless Steel Members". His work has led to a number of publications in both International and National journals and conferences. He has also been applying his expertise on fire resistance in Erasmus+ KA2 European projects, for the development of education in Civil Engineering, e.g, PARFORCE “Partnership for virtual laboratories in civil engineering”. He is a licensed Civil Engineer and Structural Specialist, certified by the Portuguese Engineers Association. He participates in different Portuguese Technical Committees for standardization, such as CT115 (Eurocodes)(SC3 - steel structures, SC4 - composite steel-concrete structures and in the horizontal group on fire) and CT46 (Fire Safety in Buildings), where he currently chairs Sub-Commission SC1. He is also the Technical Director of LERF-UA (Laboratory of Structures and Fire Resistance at the University of Aveiro), contributing on consultancy projects related to fire design for large structures, e.g, bridges, shopping centres, multi-use halls, parking facilities, airport terminals, schools, and hospitals. He has as well been involved on projects for the development of cold-formed steel profiles and on conducting fire resistance tests on construction products. Additionally, he is the Director of the journal “Metálica”, published by CMM (Portuguese Association of Metallic and Composite Construction). At the University of Aveiro, he has held different management roles, serving currently as Pro-Rector and previously as Head of the Civil Engineering Department (2015-2020) and as Director of the Technical Services of the University of Aveiro (2023). He is also currently on the Board of UNAVE (Association for Professional Training and Research at the University of Aveiro).
