About Nurul Alam
Nurul Alam is a Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Sydney Business School. His main research interests lie in the field of machine learning, credit risk and corporate distress prediction, data analytics in accounting, AI using big data in accounting domain, financial accounting, and corporate finance. He has completed his PhD at the University of Sydney Business School where he investigated the relative power of machine learning and traditional semi-parametric survival class models using accounting, market, market microstructure, and derivative instrument information for US corporate bankruptcies. His research also resulted in the development of a novel method for the application of deep learning techniques to use cases in panel data structures. Nurul’s papers have been published in journals such as International Review of Financial Analysis, Accounting & Finance, Abacus, and Journal of International Financial Markets Institutions & Money. Nurul’s quality of teaching has been recognised through more than fifteen awards, including Dean’s Citation for Teaching (Merit), Dean's Citation for Tutoring, Dean’s Award for Tutoring, and multiple Nomination for Wayne Lonergan Award for Teaching Excellence across both the Accounting and Business Analytics disciplines. Nurul received his Master of Commerce (M. Com) degree with a double major in Finance and Accounting, from The University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with Finance and Banking specialisation from The University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Prior to commencing as a full time Lecturer, he has worked at The University of Sydney Business School on numerous roles such as Tutor, Casual Lecturer, Course Coordinator, Teaching Fellow, Nominated Academics, and as RA in several high-profile ARC projects.
