About Nyssa Cullin

Do you ever wonder how microbes influence our daily lives? Or how those microbes could be utilized to make our lives and everything around us healthier and more sustainable? I do! I am passionate about bacteria, fungi, really any microorganism, and how we live together and can learn to adapt to our changing world. I have background in molecular bacteriology and the oral microbiome and currently research the connections between the oral microbiome and cancers. In the near future I want to use my knowledge and expertise in a translational field to have a direct impact on problems we face today including disease and environmental issues. I am looking for my next adventure! Working as a postdoctoral scientist for more than three years at the DKFZ in Heidelberg has posed a valuable challenge. As one of the first members of the new Microbiome and Cancer Division, I was responsible for developing original projects and overseeing their start, from the ordering of all materials, to training students, writing applications, and coordinating collaborations throughout multiple institutions and countries. I naturally developed a keen sense of task prioritization and further heightened my ability to manage multiple projects and collaborations. As I regularly lead progress meetings and compile project reports for collaborative studies, I am confident I can effectively navigate and manage the efforts of fast-paced and translational projects. With my extensive experience in presenting my research findings in both oral and written form, I am comfortable communicating research data to academics as well as overarching scientific concepts to a general audience. I know that by effectively communicating I could make an impact through science. I genuinely look forward to connecting with you and discussing how we can improve our lives with microbes!
