About Olha S.

I am a researcher and educator passionate about applying mathematics to real-world problems and advancing STEM education. With a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and an M.Sc. in STEM Education from Tufts University, my work bridges applied mathematics, optimal control theory, quantum graphs, and undergraduate mathematics education. My research focuses on control and inverse problems for partial differential equations (PDEs) and variational inequalities, with applications to quantum graphs and evolutionary processes. In parallel, I investigate how students reason about the concept of the definite integral in introductory physics, with the goal of developing research-based instructional strategies that foster conceptual understanding. I have extensive teaching experience across two countries, having served as an instructor and teaching assistant for courses ranging from Calculus and Differential Equations to Mathematical Reasoning. I am committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment — a commitment reflected in consistently high student evaluations. Throughout my academic journey, I have contributed to peer-reviewed publications, presented at international conferences, and received multiple awards recognizing both my research and teaching. I am also an active peer reviewer and contributor to mathematics education conferences. I am always open to collaborative research opportunities in control and inverse theory for PDEs and variational inequalities, as well as research exploring students’ reasoning about the integral concept in introductory physics.
