Background
About Oliver Hammond
Oliver is a first-generation, interdisciplinary early-career researcher working at the intersection of physical, materials, and green chemistry, as well as engineering. He is a Staff Scientist at the Data Management & Software Centre (DMSC) of the European Spallation Source ERIC, specializing in instrument data for small-angle neutron scattering while maintaining an active research portfolio. In 2025, he was appointed as faculty at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, affiliated with the School of Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Health (CBH), and as a fellow of the LINXS Institute of Advanced Neutron and X-ray Science. His research focuses on neutron scattering for soft materials (neutronspridning för studier av mjuka material), with overarching goals to advance expertise, education, practical guidance, and knowledge exchange in leveraging neutron science for research challenges in chemistry, engineering, biotechnology, and healthcare. His expertise spans elastic neutron and X-ray scattering (small-angle and total scattering) and atomistic-resolution modeling (MD/RMC-type) of nanostructures. A key research interest lies in neoteric ‘green solvents’, particularly deep eutectic systems and ionic liquids, where he has made significant contributions to understanding their nanoscale structure, as reflected in his high-impact publications. Beyond this, his competencies extend to solvothermal (microwave) nanofabrication, atomic force microscopy (AFM), EXAFS, in situ and extreme-condition measurements, and colloidal science—particularly micellization, stability, and small-angle scattering approaches. Oliver collaborates with a global network of leading researchers, mentors graduate and undergraduate students, engages in scientific outreach, and serves as a peer reviewer for numerous high-profile journals and awarding bodies.
