About Oliver Mann

I have 13+ years of experience leading marketing and communications at the University of British Columbia. Currently, I manage communications for UBC's Office of Community Engagement, where I support and amplify partnerships with non-profits, First Nations, government agencies, and community organizations across BC. Building communications capacity is central to how I work. I've managed over 20 direct reports throughout my career, creating systems and mentorship opportunities that develop emerging communicators into high-performing professionals. I am a settler and uninvited guest on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Hunquminum (hǝn̓q̓ǝmin̓ǝm̓) speaking peoples, currently known as Richmond, BC. With Costa Rican, West African, Spanish, Scottish, and English ancestry, I'm committed to ethical communications and storytelling that shifts power and centers community voices. I'm driven to innovate communications to be more inclusive, equitable, and decolonized. My MA research examines how Canada's largest universities can use communications and storytelling to advance truth and reconciliation and strengthen their relationships with Indigenous partners. I'm regularly invited to facilitate internal and national dialogues on equity-informed and decolonizing communications and marketing strategy. In 2025, I received UBC's President's Staff Award for Creativity and Innovation, one of two staff recognized annually among employees. While I'm a strong writer, what sets me apart is my versatility in multimedia storytelling. I'm also a videographer, photographer, and podcaster, and I’m passionate about telling stories that demonstrate how partnerships can address critical social challenges. I'm seeking my next role in communications leadership—somewhere I can build strategy, lead a team, and create meaningful social impact through values-driven work.
