Oliver Schalk

Background

About Oliver Schalk

I used to be an elite triathlete (top 20 Swedish championships, top 10 Quebec championships). This required hard work and dedication. Day after day, week after week. I also like to perform and show the same dedication in my job. Currently, I am docent at the chemical physics division at Stockholm University. I work primarily with photoelectron spectroscopy using ultrafast laser sources and synchrotron radiation where I investigate the light-induced dynamics of organic substances. Therefore I know how to work with lasers, optical instruments and vacuum techniques. Moreover, I work on data analysis, development of analytical models, which includes programming, and calculations of molecular structures and properties. My job at the University includes supervision of PhD- and Master-students, leading of international research projects, presentations at meetings and international conferences, organizing seminars, writing funding applications as well as teaching. Before I came to Stockholm, I gained a lot of expertise at different research institutes such as KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), where I received my Diploma and PhD thesis in chemistry. Afterwards, I worked at the Canadian Research Council (Ottawa) and LMU (Ludwigs-Maximilians University in Munich), where I studied the dynamics of molecules in liquid and gas phase with short laser pulses.
