About Olivia McDermott

Olivia is the course co-director of the Medical Technology Regulatory Affairs (M.Sc. and Higher Cert) programs. Her research interests are Quality 4.0, Industry 4.0, Lean, Six Sigma, Sustainability and Operational Excellence. She has published and co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers and edited books since 2021 and is currently involved in several global research projects and has featured in the Stanford University /Elsevier Top 2% cited authors in her field for 2025. She is an Associate Editor of TQM & BE, on the editorial board of Expert Review of Medical Devices and Industries journals, a member of the editorial advisory board of the International Journal of Lean Six Sigma, the International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management and Technological Sustainability, a member of the Editorial Review Board of SAGEs Sustainable Futures, Emeralds TQM journal and BMC Health Services Research. She has also received several awards for her published work from Processes (Best Paper 2022), Lean Business Ireland (Contribution to Knowledge -Best Paper 2022 and 2023, and Contribution to Knowledge -Best Book 2024), Machines (shortlisted for Best Paper 2023) and Emerald Publishing (Best Outstanding Paper 2021). She was nominated and shortlisted in the "Women in Operational Excellence" category in the 2025 Irish OpEx Awards. She has received awards for her international leadership in Lean from the International Lean Six Sigma Institute, as well as being nominated for the Lean Business Ireland "Lean Champion of the Year" in 2024. She has received research funding from the EU Horizon as part of the 7.7 million euro EU4MEDTECH project.
