About Olivia Neale

My path to architecture started with my interest in both art and mathematics. Both subjects require spatial reasoning skills and the ability to recognise patterns. How these two interact in the real world lead me onto finding a career in architecture. It was at Granit Architects & Interiors (London) that my interest for the built environment blossomed, where I watched line drawings turn into family homes and how great organisation led to the success of a practice. During my time there I gained experience in all stages and my confidence grew week on week and I came to realise that architecture truly combines my strongest abilities and characteristics. Having travelled South-East Asia [4 months] and South America [6 months] my mind was opened to how architecture across the world responds to culture, religion and space. I also learnt a lot about myself too; how I deal with pressured environments, how I handle myself in worrying situations, and how I love to throw myself into the unknown and explore new surroundings. I have learnt that not one particular aspect defines an architect and that all architects have their own skill-set. Over my years in practice and education I have been able to broaden my own skill-set; developing skills in 3D computer modelling and visualisation. Through planning applications and issues on site I’ve broadened both my problem solving skills and my knowledge of the building and construction industry. On top of this I see myself as organised, hard-working and someone full of positive energy. During my MArch I found a passion for adaptive reuse and its sustainable approach within the built environment and I hope to pursue this through my career. I was pleased to graduate with a distinction and be awarded with the RIBA Best MArch Scheme. My education along with my years of experience in practice and travel has set a great foundation for me to progress into qualifying as an architect. Outside of the architectural world you’ll find me socialising with friends and family, taking my camera out on an adventure or having my head stuck in a good book.
