Background

About Omanii Abdullah

Omanii Abdullah: poet, performer, and educator. Omanii started writing poetry as a 5th grader. He started writing seriously in the 1980s while residing and teaching in Saudi Arabia. Upon the urging of his friends, he put together a collection of his poetry that he self-published and called “Yeah, You’re Right, I’m Not Your Real Father.” The publication was well received. Omanii’s poetry has been described as “life experience poetry.” He writes about subject matter that everyone can identify with and can relate to, step-parenting, death and dying, love, black on black crime, racism, teenagers, and the joys if life. As a performer he incorporates music, slides, dramatics, and mood in his performances. As a poet he talks about what you’ve experienced in life. As a poet he touches your soul with his words. You’ll laugh. you’ll cry. As an educator in his workshops he teaches others how to put their feelings and emotions on paper. He helps the participants explore and write about their feelings concerning varied subjects, culminating in a poetry booklet for the participants. Omanii has traveled across the United States to perform and teach his poetry. No venue is too small or too large. He has performed throughout the nation at theaters, colleges, high schools, correctional facilities, youth centers and more. This is what they say: “His poetry touches the soul” -James V. Hatch author & professor CUNY, New York City “The brother is badd” -Felipe Luciano Broadcaster/WLIB, New York City “Copies of his books keep ‘walking’ away from the library” -Lisa Stogner/Librarian/El Tempo High school, El Tempo Texas “Mr. Adbullah’s workshops (for the past 5 years) have been very well received. The students and the community ask for his return every year” -Jacalyn Groves/ Library Media Specialist, Morrisville, New York “It was a very good performance, the audience loved it. They could see why he won first place.”
