MASc candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University I am currently working with gold nano-particles in order to detect disease pathology at the molecular level. Identifying key molecular markers or physiological changes at the cellular level are extremely important for practitioners to execute their therapeutic plans. However, the onset of disease is very hard to predict, not until the disease has taken a heavy toll on the individual. Thus, being able to diagnose the individual at the earliest opportunity would allow for an effective treatment plan. Therefore, the use of gold nano-particles in the future could have unrivaled diagnostic benefits. Adding these to molecular targets and using synthetic gold in the mixture would allow us to preferentially visualize the target molecule. Using gold is key, as its plasmonic resonance properties will help illuminate the targeted product on diagnostic machines. Working on capturing and creating cancer spheroids in a microfluidic device for drug testing. The spheroid shape mimics the microenvironment in a human system, whereas the microfluidic device allows for easy imaging and pharmaceutical drug testing due to its transparent nature.
