About Orah Raia

Passionate about improving the lives of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). Co-founder of the nonprofit, HOPE North Carolina, Inc. and working towards expanding inclusive housing options for people with I/DD, with the goal of creating an inclusive, intentional community in the Triangle area. Previously involved with another nonprofit in fundraising, communications and collaborations to open a non-profit thrift store dedicated to improving the lives of teens and adults with I/DD by offering employment opportunities. Worked in the field of special education for 35 years as an advocate and proponent for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in schools and communities. Due to the lack of services in North Carolina for our son Brian, which would enable him to live in the community with the supports he needs, we made the difficult decision to move out of North Carolina and relocate to New Jersey, with the hopes that he can have a more fulfilling life there. North Carolina, as many other states, needs to do better for those individuals who rely on support services to reach their full potential as citizens in their communities.
