CSI purchases slabs of steel that are then heated in a furnace, flattened by large rollers, and finally rolled into a large coil weighing between and pounds. As a CSI employee, which is now owned by Nucor, I am responsible for ensuring that the steel production runs efficiently. I spent the first 5 ½ years of my employment as a mechanic, fixing mechanical breakdowns, and performing diagnostics on hydraulic components such as pumps, accumulators, dcv's, check valves, etc. I am highly skilled in welding, oxyacetylene cutting, the use of precision instruments such as micrometers of multiple variations, schematic print reading, rigging tools and sling inspection and use, lubrication of friction-prone components like bearings, pipe fitting, and understanding and utilizing gearing ratios to complete my tasks. In addition to my technical skills, I have also developed effective communication strategies. I prioritize effective communication when it comes to repairs. Often, the biggest indicators to a solution are the operator's complaints or answers to poignant questions. The ability to troubleshoot effectively on the fly, under the pressure of a loss of production, is crucial. It is essential to research the answer as efficiently as possible rather than relying on one's own skills, experience, and knowledge. Knowing what resources are available, being a self-starter, and knowing where to get the answers to a problem, no matter when or what department it is in, is what sets me apart from other maintenance personnel. Relying solely on one's own skills, experience, and knowledge when there are resources like coworkers within reach is a mistake. Although I have had some failures, I consistently strive to be exceptional.
