About Owen Griffiths

Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to be a big shot business guy. That was going to be me, a softer, gentler, Gordon Gekko! As it turns out, basing your life on a fictional character has a few drawbacks. In this case, the biggest one being that old Gordo got to where he was through illegal activity. I guess when I was 5, I really just wanted to wear a suit and tie more than I wanted to be a titan of Wall Street. They really had something cooking with those huge collars, didn’t they? As we age, the reveries we had as kids remain with us even if they’re buried somewhere in the back beneath reality. This probably explains why I’m in business school for the second time. I still want to be a big shot business guy but not in the same way. I want to be able to grow as both a person and a professional while helping the people around me to do the same. There isn’t much fun in being the only person standing at the top of the mountain. Teamwork may not always make the dream work but a person can only get so far on sheer tyranny of will alone. Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to learn from many great people and acquire a broad range of skills because those same people continually gave me opportunities to try new things. This is why I can give a presentation on construction products or best practices in suicide risk assessment. Or why I have achieved certification as a parent coach and a Project Management Professional. Research will show that the best teams are those with the greatest diversity of perspectives. I believe the best (and most interesting) people are often those who can approach a problem from a diverse range of perspectives as well. I have tried to embody this in my career. On the personal side of things, if you can’t find me on the golf course – deep in the bushes no doubt – then your next stop should be the library.
