Background
About Owen Sedransk
I am a senior at Tufts University where I am pursuing a double major in Biology and Biomedical Engineering Sciences. As a varsity lacrosse player, I have developed a profound appreciation for the intricacies of musculoskeletal health and have witnessed firsthand the impact of medical care on athletes' performance and overall well-being. Currently, I am working at HSS for the Sports Medicine Department on a project that is hoping to further data in support of neuromuscular training and its significant impact on injury rates in young athletes. I am also conducting a pilot study with the hope of developing a scoring system for a single leg squat that can predict an athlete’s risk of sustaining a knee injury. Upon completion of this study, I hope to implement this scoring system into the HSS sponsored RIIP REPS app. Last summer, I worked as a clinical research assistant for Dr. Evan Garfein and the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Montefiore, where I headed a project focused on surgical and patient-reported outcomes of hidradenitis suppurativa. This experience equipped me with valuable research skills and an understanding of the importance of evidence-based medicine in providing optimal patient care. I possess a strong foundation in research ethics and regulations, holding certifications in EPIC/Velos systems, as well as approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subject research and FDA-approved drugs and devices. Beyond my clinical research experiences, I have actively contributed to the field of sports medicine and patient care. During my time home from college, I volunteered with the athletic training staff at my high school, where I gained insights into the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries. Additionally, at the Silklab at Tufts, I engage in cutting-edge biomedical research aimed at developing a silk-based tattoo ink that is visible only under fluorescent light. This innovative project addresses the needs of radiotherapy patients who prefer inconspicuous markings, thus exemplifying my commitment to improving patient experiences through novel medical solutions. I am also helping on a new project which will focus on advancing true-3D tissue engineering with this same photoactive silk-based material in order to fabricate fully functional tissues for surgery.
