About Pablo Lodeiro

Degree in Chemistry from the University of A Coruña (UDC). Extraordinary PhD award; thesis based on the use of analytical and physicochemical techniques applied to the removal of pollutants through the use of materials of biological origin (biomaterials). As a postdoc, I work in two business projects related to the revalorization of waste for the removal of metals. I also collaborated in the development of a spin-off. In 2008 I obtained a postdoctoral contract for 3 years, including 24 months of stays in Spain, France and Finland. The topics I worked on are related to the physicochemical characterization of latex nanoparticles, biochars, and the recovery of metals by nanoparticle formation. In 2012 I obtained a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (IEF) contract at the National Oceanographic Centre Southampton (UK), where I studied the behavior and toxicity of silver nanoparticles for 2 years. From 2015 to 2020, I am working as a senior researcher at the Geomar Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), where I was principal investigator of the group ‘Contaminant behaviour in aquatic systems’. I participated in two international projects and took part in 3 international oceanographic campaigns. In December 2020 I was awarded a Beatriz Galindo Senior Distinguished Researcher contract at the University of Lleida. Since 15/12/2024 I am Associate Professor at the same university. I am co-directing 3 PhD Theses; I am the PI of a coordinated project of the National Plan; co-IP of a project of the Agrotecnio centre; I participate as a cooperating partner in a project of the German DFG and I am a full member of the ‘International Chemical Speciation Task group’. Since my PhD, I have worked in 6 European research teams in 5 countries (Germany, England, Finland, France and Spain). In total I have more than 7 years of postdoctoral experience with contracts in research institutions abroad and 2 more years of short research stays (8-10 months) while on contract in Spanish universities. My research interests are focused on environmental chemistry, covering the development of bioadsorbents, pollutant removal, chemical speciation and bioavailability, with special attention to the interactions and behaviour of nutrients, organic matter, colloids and nanoparticles in environmental matrices.
