Background
About Pablo Millalen
Mari mari kom pu che (Hello everyone), I am a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the American Indian Studies Center (AISC) at UCLA. In May 2024, I earned my Ph.D. in Latin American Studies from the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at the University of Texas at Austin, with a Graduate Portfolio in Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS). My research bridges Indigenous and Latin American Studies, focusing on land politics and environmental justice in contexts shaped by settler colonialism and extractive capitalism. In my dissertation, I examined how large-scale forestry plantations (Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus globulus) in Wallmapu—the ancestral lands of the Mapuche People—create an eco-social crisis. This crisis manifests in water scarcity, socio-economic precarity, the erosion of Indigenous land systems, and the undermining of millennia-old Mapuche culture. Chaltumay (Thank you).
