About Pablo Vivanco

I completed a Ph.D. thesis in Modern European/Jewish history at Vienna University, previously UCLA. My main dissertation -research interest lies in 19th century liberalism and journalism, particularly in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. My understanding of political liberalism is strongly influenced by German historians like J. Habermas, L. Gall, J. Kocka and Th. Nipperdey, because the works of these scholars teach us that our political heritage comprises a history of solidarity between various strata of society, the socially mobile and less mobile strata, cultural minorities and majorities, old and young etc. My research profited from studies in the field of modern Jewish history such as Saul Friedlander's, Fritz Stern's and Jacob Katz's. Their work remind us to take the quest for individual identification processes of minorities seriously and that this quest did not necessarily included ethnic parochialism. Among other aims, I tied to establish some new parameters according to which the (still very lively) popular critique of the liberal-democratic society state may be accustomed and integrated into the history of liberal thought (and not of thoughts sympathetic with any sorts of right-wing or extreme left-wing ideas). My goal is to make parameters useful for current debates on economics, the politics of the welfare-state, the problems of racism and xenophobia, and the self-identification of minorities. Ultimately, this all can be professionally made fruitful in various fields: university and teaching, journalism, cultural politics as well as in the arena of politics.
