Background
About Page Vincent
MY MISSION As teachers, we hope to arm our students with the tools they need to face the future. Among the important challenges facing this generation are Climate Change and the pressures on our natural world. I believe that I can deliver both information and optimism in a 50-minute assembly,“CLIMATE CHANGE 101,” designed to give middle schoolers the basic language and data. My goal is to instill faith that this issue is within our grasp and to inspire students to bring their personal talents and passions to bear. BACK STORY Over the span of my 25-year career at Rippowam Cisqua School, I taught algebra to Grades 7 - 9, served as Dean of the Ninth Grade, and acted as Director of Secondary School Placement. A true honor, I was asked to join Ripp's Board of Trustees (a first for a former faculty member) and I have served proudly for two terms. Upon retiring, I split my time between two island locations. Living on an island is truly beautiful, but the changes to the natural world are so much more apparent and fast-tracked. I decided to learn more about our environment, so I went back to school. In 2023, I completed a Certificate in Climate Change from University of Pennsylvania to stack onto my Bachelor's from Duke University and Master's in Curriculum from Western Connecticut State University. Concurrently, I was honored to be asked to join the Board of Visitors of Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment, where I Co-Chair the Marine Lab Committee. STRATEGIES Because I taught middle school for decades I know that developmentally these students: • Need a level of fluency in the vocabulary, data, and jargon associated with Climate Change. • Respond well to content that is neither too technical nor too watered down. • Are becoming passionate about causes and eager to make an impact. • Are reflective of their own abilities. MOTIVATION Optimism! My goal is to instill faith, that this issue is within our grasp, and inspiration, that each of us can bring our personal talents and passions to bear. REVIEWS “Mrs. Vincent’s presentation really reiterated that while Climate Change is a problem, there is good news and that people are trying to fix it.” “At my school, I just hear that Climate Change is a problem, and all the negative stuff. but Mrs. Vincent gave us the positive hopeful information too.”
