About Paige Thombs

Current PhD student in the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria. My research looks at the ways that religious identity shapes one's legal practice. My interest lies in understanding the tension between religious identity and legal practice, particularly where legal ethics are concerned. My research also includes religious-based discrimination within the legal profession, anti-semitism, and religious freedom cases in Canadian law. I have done significant research into religion and law including recent S. 2 (religious freedom) cases, legal and faith-based ethics, and faith-based lawyering. I have a progressive, egalitarian, and feminist approach to my work and research. Well-versed in ethnographic and qualitative methodologies. High academic achievement including several awards and scholarship and a recent Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship nomination. Over 25 years of experience in social justice work including disability rights, the rights of children and youth in care, and equal access to employment. 12 years of experience advising on Deaf rights and improving access to services for Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing persons. Intending to complete PhD in 2025 followed by meaningful work in academia, research, and/or equity, diversity, and inclusion consultation.
