About Pam Murphy

I often get asked how someone with a degree in Statistics ended up working in Human Resources. Well, that's a long story but actually a career in HR isn't such a leap for a "numbers person" like me. When people think of HR, they often overlook the many HR functions that are quantitative in nature: Payroll, Compensation & Total Rewards, Pension and Benefits Administration, etc. These are the areas of HR that appeal most to me. I have 10+ years of experience in Payroll, Pension and Benefits Administration. Ultimately, I am most interested in a career in Compensation & Total Rewards as I feel this is the function of HR where I could best utilize my quantitative skills. I also enjoy the "people" side of HR. I have strong customer service skills, gained through 5 years of working as a server in the restaurant industry while attending university. In my current role, my clients are my fellow employees and I strive to provide them with the best customer service possible. In April 2016, I expanded my current role in HR to provide backup support to our Recruiting team. I have enjoyed this experience and look forward to gaining more exposure to the operational side of HR. In Sept 2017, I was given a development opportunity to train with our Compensation team. I hope to gain valuable knowledge and practical experience with this team in the near term as this aligns with my future career aspirations. I’m currently working towards my CCP designation. In addition to my degree, I have also completed courses offered by the Canadian Payroll Association and have attended various professional development seminars. I am committed to life long learning and development and I don't believe a career path is a straight line. I am interested in any opportunity that will allow me to apply the knowledge and skills I've gained thus far while continuing to learn, grow and develop.
