Background
About Pankaj Sarin
A Materials Scientist with a very strong foundation in physics and chemistry of ceramic materials, their processing and characterization, and their structure-property relationships. He has more than 20 years of experience in a wide spectrum of materials research. He has lead several interdisciplinary core and materials science projects, from inception to completion. These have included applied research projects, as well as projects which have probed fundamental properties of materials at the atomistic level. He has successfully designed and developed unique instrumentation, to conduct novel experiments to understand material behavior in extreme enviornments using advanced x-ray scattering methods. He has researched materials for future applications in defense, energy, and medicine; and he has also investigated archeological materials from the ancient past (6th century B.C.). His work has been very well received by the research community and has resulted in several (> 50) publications and presentations (> 175) at conferences and workshops throughout the world, both as contributed and invited seminars. Pankaj's research interests are in developing the science of ceramic materials to advance their technological applications. He strongly believes in the considerable promise that ceramic materials behold for materials-based solutions to problems of global importance including energy, security, environment, and in medicine. Their advantages stem from key properties such as physico-chemical stability in oxidizing/reducing conditions, even at high temperatures; ionic, electronic and thermal conductivity over a wide range; and biocompatibility. In addition, the richness in the variety and complexity in atomic structures of ceramic materials, extend numerous possibilities to engineer new high performance functional materials. Pankaj is also a reviewer for many international journals in materials research, instrumentation, and environmental science and technology. Specialties: Advanced X-ray Scattering/Diffraction (Rietveld, PDF ); Spectroscopic methods (XPS, EDS, FTIR, NMR); Thermal Analysis (DSC, TGA, Dilatometry); Microstructure Characterization (SEM, Optical Microscopy, surface area, porosity, elemental/crystalline composition, pycnometry) Thermal Expansion; Mechanical properties; Phase Transformations; Oxidation; Corrosion and aqueous interactions Structure-Property relations at the atomic and microstructure levels Processing of Ceramic Materials and Composites
